Boat decorated with Christmas lights on the Danube in winter

Budapest is regularly voted as having the best Christmas Markets in Europe. But after standing in the cold at St. Stephen's Basilica, the best way to thaw out is on a heated boat.

The "Advent" Vibe

From late November to December, the river cruises transform.

  • Decor: Boats are decked out in garlands, lights, and Christmas trees.
  • Scent: The air inside smells of cloves, cinnamon, and orange peel.
  • Music: Live piano playing carols or holiday jazz standards.

The Menu: Winter Warmers

Forget cold beer. The star here is Forralt Bor (Mulled Wine). Deep red, hot, and spicy. Most winter cruises include a mug of this or hot chocolate upon arrival. Food options often shift to heartier winter fare: Stuffed Cabbage (Töltött Káposzta), Beigli (poppy seed roll), and Strudel.

Sightseeing in Winter

  • The Light: Winter sunsets are early (around 4 PM in Dec). By 5 PM, the city is pitch black and brilliantly illuminated.
  • The Tram: You'll see the famous Christmas Tram (Tram 2) running along the riverbank, wrapped in 30,000 LED lights. It moves like a glowing streak of light beside the boat.

Practical Tips for Winter Cruising

  1. Is it cold? No. The interiors are heated properly. However, if you want to go on the open deck for photos, bring a hat and gloves. The wind on the river is icy.
  2. Cloakrooms: Most boats have them. Peel off your heavy coats so you can enjoy dinner comfortably.
  3. Booking: Christmas is peak season. Book weeks out, especially for the 24th, 25th, and 26th of December.

Experience: Start at the Vörösmarty Square market, grab a chimney cake, walk to the dock (5 mins), and hop on a boat. The perfect winter evening.
